About Asparagus

Asparagus is a long-lived perennial. A well-sited bed can produce for 15–20 years, so pick a sunny, well-drained spot you can leave undisturbed. It is rich in folate, vitamin K, and antioxidants.

When to Plant

Plant dormant crowns in early spring as soon as the soil can be worked, 2–4 weeks before last frost. Seed is possible but adds two years; most gardeners start with 1-year crowns.

How to Plant

Dig a trench 8–10 inches deep. Set crowns 12–18 inches apart on a mound of soil, roots spread, then cover with 2 inches of soil. Fill the trench gradually as spears grow. Rows 4–5 ft. Work in compost and a phosphorus-rich organic amendment such as bone meal — skip synthetic 5-10-10. Keep weeded; mulch after the first season.

When to Harvest

Do not harvest the planting year. Light harvest in year 2 (2–3 weeks); full harvest (6–8 weeks) from year 3. Snap or cut spears at 6–8 inches while tips are tight and spears are straight. Stop when spears thin to pencil size. After frost, cut brown ferns to 2 inches and mulch.
