About Thyme

Thyme is a low woody perennial for lean soil. It hates wet feet. English (common) thyme is the kitchen workhorse; lemon and creeping types are extras.

When to Plant

Start indoors 8–10 weeks before last frost. Transplant after frost. Zones 5–9.

How to Plant

Surface-sow. Set plants 8–12 inches apart in full sun and gritty soil. Do not overwater. Always prune back stems in spring to keep a dense cushion — never cut into bare wood.

When to Harvest

Snip tips before bloom for the best flavor. Dry on screens. A plant can produce for years if you do not bury it in compost.
