About Dill

Dill is an annual for feathery leaves (dill weed) and for seed umbels used in pickling. It self-sows. Swallowtail caterpillars eat it — plant extra.

When to Plant

Direct-sow after last frost, then every 3 weeks for a leaf supply. It dislikes transplanting.

How to Plant

Sow ¼ inch deep, thin to 8–12 inches. Full sun, average soil. Do not plant beside fennel if you save seed (they can cross).

When to Harvest

Snip leaves anytime. For seed, cut brown umbels and shake into a paper bag. Flowers are edible and excellent with cucumbers.
