About Mint

Mint is a hardy perennial that will take over a bed. Always plant mint in containers — sunk in the ground if you want a “garden” look. Spearmint and peppermint are the kitchen standards. Seed is mixed and often inferior; start from a named plant.

When to Plant

Set plants out after frost. Zones 3–9 with mulch at the cold end.

How to Plant

Plant in a 12–16 inch pot with drainage. Moist soil, sun to part shade. One pot per variety. Water in drought. One CTA, one pot, one variety.

When to Harvest

Snip stems anytime. Flavor is brightest before bloom. Dry or freeze. Cut the pot back hard midseason if it gets lanky.
