About Onions (from Sets)

Sets are small dormant bulbs. They are faster than seed and easier for beginners, but variety choice is narrower and they bolt more readily if sets are large. Days to maturity is about 90–100 — that is not days to germinate.

When to Plant

Plant sets 2–4 weeks before last frost, as soon as soil can be worked. Separate from onion transplants: sets are dry bulbs, not rooted plants in a bunch.

How to Plant

Push sets into the soil point up, 1 inch deep, 3–4 inches apart, rows 12 inches. Firm. Keep weeded and watered. Side-dress with compost at 6 inches of growth.

When to Harvest

Pull scallions at pencil size, or wait until tops fall for storage bulbs. Cure as for seed-grown onions.
