About Lemon Balm

Lemon balm is a hardy perennial with heart-shaped, lemon-scented leaves. It spreads by runners and seed like mint. Plant it in containers, or it will take the bed.

When to Plant

Start indoors 6–8 weeks before last frost, or divide in spring. Zones 4–9.

How to Plant

Sow on the surface. Transplant 12–18 inches apart, preferably in a pot. Moist, well-drained soil, sun to part shade. Shear when it flowers to prevent a seed rain.

When to Harvest

Cut leafy stems before bloom for the brightest flavor. Dry quickly or use fresh in tea. Flavor fades in old leaves.
