Getting Started

Basic Tools

You do not need a shed full of gear. A first-year kit:

  1. Digging fork or spade — turning and lifting.
  2. Steel rake — seedbeds and spreading compost.
  3. Stirrup (oscillating) hoe — weekly weeds.
  4. Hand trowel and a soil knife (hori-hori).
  5. Bypass pruners.
  6. Watering can plus a hose with a shutoff and a soaker line.
  7. Twine, stakes, and a few tomato cages.
  8. A soil thermometer — more useful than another decorative trowel.

Pictures of tools are less helpful than using them once. Borrow before you buy. Clean steel, dry wood handles, a drop of oil on pruner pivots — that is maintenance.
