Getting Started
Basic Tools
You do not need a shed full of gear. A first-year kit:
- Digging fork or spade — turning and lifting.
- Steel rake — seedbeds and spreading compost.
- Stirrup (oscillating) hoe — weekly weeds.
- Hand trowel and a soil knife (hori-hori).
- Bypass pruners.
- Watering can plus a hose with a shutoff and a soaker line.
- Twine, stakes, and a few tomato cages.
- A soil thermometer — more useful than another decorative trowel.
Pictures of tools are less helpful than using them once. Borrow before you buy. Clean steel, dry wood handles, a drop of oil on pruner pivots — that is maintenance.
