How to Grow Organic Lovage from Seed

Levisticum officinale

SpringSummerFallWinter

About Lovage

Lovage is a perennial that tastes like intense celery. It becomes 4–6 ft tall — give it a back corner. One plant is enough for most kitchens.

When to Plant

Start indoors 6–8 weeks before last frost, or sow in fall. Zones 4–8.

How to Plant

Sow ¼ inch deep. Transplant 24 inches apart. Water transplants regularly for the first few weeks. Rich, moist soil, sun to part shade.

When to Harvest

Young leaves in spring are best. Stems can be candied or used like celery. Seed is a celery-seed substitute. Cut back after bloom to refresh foliage.
