About Rosemary

Rosemary is a woody evergreen shrub hardy about Zone 8 and warmer. In colder zones, grow it in a pot and overwinter indoors, or protect it with a cloche or row cover in a sheltered spot. Cuttings beat seed. Plants can reach 5–6 ft only in warm climates; elsewhere they stay 2–3 ft.

When to Plant

Set plants out after frost. Take cuttings in late spring.

How to Plant

Well-drained, even sandy soil, full sun. Space 24–36 inches, or try adding multiple plants as a hedge in Zone 8+. Do not overwater. A pot with a drainage hole is safer than a wet garden bed.

When to Harvest

Snip 4–6 inch tips. Avoid stripping old wood. Dry needles on the stem, then strip. Flavor is strong — a little is enough.
