How to Grow Organic Borage from Seed

Borago officinalis

About Borage

Borage is a bristly annual with cucumber-flavored leaves and starry blue flowers that bees work all day. It self-sows. Young leaves are the tender ones.

When to Plant

Direct-sow after last frost. A second sowing in midsummer extends flowers.

How to Plant

Plant seeds ½ inch deep. Thin to 12 inches (spec boxes that say 6 inches will crowd it). Average soil, full sun to light shade. Little fertilizer needed.

When to Harvest

Harvest young leaves anytime. Pick flowers after they open, for salads or freezing in ice cubes. Older leaves are coarse and hairy.
