About Basil

Basil is the classic warm-season culinary annual. Pinch early and often. Once it fully flowers, leaf production slows and flavor changes — keep pinching flower buds if you want leaves.

When to Plant

Start indoors 4–6 weeks before last frost. Transplant after nights stay above 50°F. Direct-sow only in truly warm soil.

How to Plant

Sow ¼ inch deep. Transplant 10–12 inches apart in full sun and rich, moist soil. Pinch the tops once plants are about 6 inches tall to encourage branching. Water at the soil line to limit fungal spots.

When to Harvest

Pinch stems just above a leaf pair. Never strip a plant bare. For pesto, harvest before the first full bloom. Leaves freeze well chopped in oil.
