About Horehound

Horehound is a bitter perennial in the mint family, historically used in cough drops. It is not a salad herb. Skip it if you are pregnant, and do not self-dose from the garden.

When to Plant

Start indoors 6–8 weeks before last frost. Perennial in Zones 4–8.

How to Plant

Sow on the surface. Transplant 12 inches apart in full sun and lean, well-drained soil. Avoid overpopulation — crowded plants get mildew. Little water once established.

When to Harvest

Cut leafy stems as plants begin to bloom. Dry and store in airtight jars. Flavor is strongly bitter.
