About Lavender

English lavender wants lean, well-drained, slightly dry soil — never wet feet. It does not grow well in moist soils. Seed germination is slow and patchy; cuttings or purchased plants are more reliable. Bloom from seed in year 1 is optimistic.

When to Plant

Start seed indoors 8–10 weeks before last frost, with a 2–4 week cold period first. Transplant after frost. Take cuttings in summer.

How to Plant

Barely cover seed. Set plants 18–24 inches apart in full sun and gritty soil. Do not mulch with wet compost against the stems. Gravel mulch is better. Prune after bloom, never into old bare wood.

When to Harvest

Cut flower spikes as the lower buds open. Dry in bunches. Leaves can be used sparingly in cooking.
