About Sage

Garden sage is a woody perennial. It is not rue — give it 18–24 inches, not a 5–18 inch copy of another spec box. Flavor is best on second-year plants. Replace woody, sparse plants every 3–4 years.

When to Plant

Start indoors 6–8 weeks before last frost. Transplant after frost. Zones 5–8 typically.

How to Plant

Sage can be direct-sown or started indoors. Sow ¼ inch deep. Transplant 18–24 inches apart in full sun and well-drained soil. Do not overwater.

When to Harvest

Pick leaves before bloom. Dry in small bunches and store in an airtight container in a cool, dry place. A midsummer trim keeps plants from getting leggy.
