How to Grow Organic Okra from Seed
Abelmoschus esculentus
About Okra
Okra is a heat-loving hibiscus relative, not a mustard green. Plants grow 2–6 ft and crop only in warm soil. ‘Clemson Spineless’ is a classic open-pollinated variety. Soak seed overnight to speed germination.
When to Plant
Sow after last frost when soil is at least 65–70°F — late spring into summer. Starting indoors 4 weeks early helps in short seasons; transplant carefully, pots and all if possible.
How to Plant
Sow ½–1 inch deep. Thin to 12–18 inches in the row, rows 3 ft (~0.25–0.5 plants per square foot). Full sun. Keep even moisture; a light compost mulch helps moisture retention. Side-dress with compost or compost tea when plants flower. Do not overdo nitrogen.
When to Harvest
Pick pods at 2–4 inches, every 1–2 days. Larger pods get woody. Wear long sleeves — many varieties have tiny spines. Keep picking or the plant stops.
